Reviews for THE WALNUT TREE, YALDING

Went on one of my wife's Groupon adventures last night. Sometimes the restaurants can be underwhelming but sometimes you can find a real gem and last night was certainly the latter. We arrived at the Walnut tree in Yalding to be greeted by a beautiful Tudor style building built in 1492. We were shown to our table and ordered drinks while we perused the menu. Food was ordered and starters arrived, good portion size and quality was great. Off to a good start! We had both ordered rump steak for the main and when it arrived at the table, again very well presented and the size of the steak, WOW! But the best was to come. So often when you order steak, it isn't cooked to your liking but this was perfect and the flavour was great. The service was efficient and friendly without harassing you, which is a major plus point. All in all a very pleasant evening and a location that I would definitely visit again.

I think you need to be a local to enjoy this pub. There's not much space inside in the pub area, the ale was okay but I wish I'd had a wine or bottled beer. The good bit was the gorgeous fire between the restaurant and pub area, if you can get there it's lovely.

We booked a table for 6 to celebrate my wife’s birthday at 7pm on Saturday. We were told we could only have the table until 9:00pm. When we arrived there was a lovely log fire burning in the bar area. Then it went downhill..a number local guys were sat at the bar and just looked at us, making no attempt to allow us access to order a drink. I squeezed through them and my wife followed. We were completely encircled by the locals and I had to stand sideways at the bar. Then one of the locals deliberately pressed up against my wife’s back while leaning right over her to pick up his drink. No word of apology or “excuse me”. We then moved to the area away from the fire and into the room by the restaurant away from the bar area and eventually to our table. Service was very slow even though we were the only table! All the young staff were very friendly. The noise from the bar area got louder and louder with one or two of the women really screeching and most of them shouting at each other to be heard. Our starters arrived and were fine but the mains were not. Goats cheese was fairly cold, steak really tough and chewy, ham egg and chips pretty bland. No one else arrived in the restaurant and we left around 9:30. As we were leaving one of the local guys by the door decided to pass wind really loudly and made some “clever” schoolboy comment. I’m sure it’s great for the few locals in the bar but not for us. We won’t be returning.

Had to send my steak back The replacement was just as bad. Could tell it had been frozen Rest of the Food was mediocre at best. Waitress was really good you could see how embarrassed she was

Booked a table for Sunday lunch. Waited over an hour. Staff never came to apologise for time taken. Freezing cold, everyone was eating with their coats on. Pub is run down, seats are dirty and uncomfortable. Walked out in the end because food took too long to arrive. The owner is certainly missing an advantage here, as this is the only meal serving pub in Yalding. If your trying to supporting your local business. Don't bother. Total let down by this service. Will never go there again

Booked a table for Sunday lunch. It is a noisy, shabby, and very very cold place to be. Had to go to the bar to ask if we could order food, after waiting 20 minutes for a server. Ordered Sunday roast, after 55 minutes it had not appeared, not a word from a server or the kitchen to explain why. Everything at the walnut tree is so very tired, right down to the lumps of old foam for sitting on. Never again.

I hadn't been here for several years so made a point of seeking it out last night for a drink with a friend. The nice quiet atmosphere upon arrival soon disappeared when a large group arrived, two adult males and several young teen males. From the outset the group very very badly behaved, loud , rude and abusive and lots of swearing and running round the bar. Any landlord worth their salt would have asked them to leave, unfortunately the girl behind the bar who clearly lacked experience just served them and did nothing to challenge their behaviour. (Possibly as they were local?) Couldn't wait to leave, I wouldn't recommend it unless you fancy an evening with the Chavs.

I sat down for lunch and we ordered two burger, meant to be 2 patties but only got one each. Along with that, it was a dry Pattie with dry bread. One of the worst burgers, I have ever had. The price of £32 for that as well, outrageous!!!!

Had an awesome lunch this afternoon using a Groupon voucher. Two courses and a glass of wine each. The food and service was amazing, I could not believe the quality and freshness. Some of the best food I’ve had in awhile. Katie V our waitress was lovely ,attentive and nothing was too much trouble.

Freezing cold, the fire only went in when the manager turned up at 6 ish, apparently staff were not permitted to adjust the heating Service staff were friendly and efficient, but we waited over an hour for a single course (burgers and a steak). It then took a further 20 minutes to pay. We asked for filter steak, got rump, at this point couldn't be bothered to argue as were so hungry, they happily charged the additional cost for the rump... On a positive note, the food was nice (score one star) and the servers were polite (score one more star).
